Over The Green
Typing “Gold” For “Golf” Is No Longer A Typo

So golf is in the Olympics. Great. I’m not upset, certainly not bitter. I just thought the games could have been better represented by other sports. But I’m glad Tiger and Michelle and Ian are excited about the prospects of playing for their countries. And somewhere, there is a kid we’ve yet to hear of…

But still, a few thoughts.

If it is decided that a new golf course needs to be built for the 2016 Games in Rio, I suggest it be built somewhere else. The Rio Olympics are being positioned as a big deal for South America, so why not bring another country in on the fun? According to Golf Digest’s list of the world’s courses, Brazil already has 130 while neighboring Paraguay has but 8 and Uruguay 10. (Suriname and Guyana only have 1 each, but I’ll concede they’re too far.) Let’s spread the wealth a bit.

Also, since even golf’s Olympic promoters concede that there are still logistics to work out, how about they change the method of qualifying? Much has been made about how if the games were held right now, with golf included, many great players (especially Americans) wouldn’t make the team, which would be composed of each nation’s top two. Why not even things up a little bit by having a qualifying match in each country? Or how about, in trying to do something to preserve the Olympics’ original ideal, each team consists of one pro and one amateur? Also, if a golfer can prove any blood from another country going back—oh, I don’t know, four generations?—why not allow him or her to try qualifying for that nation’s team? So if, for example, Lucas Glover had a great-great grandparent from Austria, he could try to play for them. Again, spread the wealth.

Read this AP story on the voting for golf and rugby and a few questions come up.

—A 72-hole stroke-play tournament? We can’t come up with a more exciting format than that? Why not team match play?

—Tiger is already a 6-to-1 favorite to win, along with any player from Britain or Ireland. So in six years, no one better is going to come along? Maybe the game is in more trouble than even I thought.

—“Golf gave a commitment to the IOC that it would not stage any major championships on the Olympic dates.” The games will be August 5-21, 2016. Did anyone talk to the PGA of America? How about if players have to choose between the Olympics and the PGA Championship? (Sorry, Baltusrol. Now the whole word is dumping on New Jersey.)

—I’d forgotten that golf was not voted in four years ago. Anyone remember why not? Other than intense lobbying, what changed?

And there are numerous other issues hinted at—such as discrimination from private clubs—that are sure to come up again.

So there will be plenty more to talk/tweet/dish about for at least 7 years. Thanks, IOC.

(Oh, and happy birthday, Annika.)
